Consider Becoming A HospiceCare Volunteer!
Looking for a “Few Good Men” (and women too) to join our HospiceCare volunteer ranks
Florida Hospital HospiceCare is looking for volunteers who would be willing to assist the chaplains in providing spiritual support for hospice patients and their loved ones, be vigil volunteers to sit with those who would otherwise be alone at the end of their life, or assist in our two in-patient units: Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast and HospiceCare at Oceanside in Ormond Beach.
“We also have a special need for male companion volunteers.” said Barbara Cady, Florida Hospital HospiceCare Volunteer Training Specialist. “Many times our male patients prefer to spend time with a male volunteer who share their interests of sports or hobbies and can relate to them one to one. So finding more male volunteers is very important to us.”
Volunteers fill many roles at Florida Hospital HospiceCare. They are an important part of the patient care team, providing a special kind of caring and compassion to our patients and their families. HospiceCare volunteers are trained by our professional staff and receive certification for their training. Volunteer training takes place across Volusia and Flagler counties as needed. For those who want to work directly with patients and their loved ones:
You could:
• Provide emotional support and friendship to patients and their loved ones
• Listen to patients and families
• Read to a patient, or hold a hand in times of stress
• Stay with a patient while family members take a needed break or keep an appointment
• Go shopping or run errands for a patient
• Provide transportation for a patient or family member
• Pray with a patient
Our Complementary Program volunteers play a key role in a patient's well-being.
Our complementary programs provide patients and their loved ones an opportunity to interact with some of the things they love. Our HosPoochCare/HosPussCare Pet Partners program brings patients closer to the "unconditional love" of pets. Life Legacies volunteers act as "recorders" for the stories of our patients lives. Volunteers are an integral part of our daily operations.
Opportunities include:
• Calling bereaved families to offer emotional support
• Coordinating mailings to bereaved families
• Typing, answering phones and filing
• Helping with data entry
• Greeting visitors at our Oceanside and Stuart F. Meyer units
• Playing piano at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House or other instruments at either unit
• Working with the Community Liaisons at local health fairs and other community events
• Assisting with various other fundraisers and activities throughout the year.
